We want to acknowledge that many of us are on the traditional territory of First Nations across Turtle Island including the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis people. The territory is within the lands protected by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe and allied nations to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes.

We recognize that in this territory, Indigenous rights holders have endured historical oppression and continue to endure inequalities that have largely resulted from the widespread failure of non-Indigenous treaty people to hold up their responsibilities within the Dish With One Spoon Covenant.

At NTFT, we honour the resilience of Indigenous communities and commit to reconciliation by amplifying Indigenous voices, supporting Indigenous initiatives, supporting and working with Indigenous artists and musicians, providing resources and programming free of charge to Indigenous communities coast-to-coast-to-coast, and acknowledging traditional territories. Our gratitude extends to Elders and community leaders for their guidance.

We encourage you to reflect on the land that you are on, who the traditional keepers of the land are, what the treaty relationship is, or if it’s unceded territory.
